What You Need for Your Application
To visit Canada you must have permission unless you live in the USA. This can be in the form of a visa we issue or, if you live in a visa-free country, an ETA Canada electronic travel authorisation obtained on the Internet for $7 Canadian. To obtain either of these permissions you must meet our requirements. These are briefly:
- A valid passport or other travel document (see NOTE below)
- In good health without criminal or immigration-related convictions
- Successfully convincing us you have strong ties with your home country
- Successfully persuading us you will leave Canada after your visit
- Being able to prove you have enough money for your expenses
NOTE: We are unable to accept the following travel documents: Provisional Venezuela passports, South African temporary passports, passports supposedly from Somalia, and non-machine-readable passports from Czech Republic. Even if you have a valid ETA Canada, we will not allow you to enter when you present any of those documents.
We may require documented proof of anything you claim when applying for your Canada ETA or visa. For example, we might ask you for a medical report by a panel physician in your country, or a letter of invitation from someone in Canada who knows you.
What You Need While in Canada on an ETA
You must have your identification and travel documents with you everywhere you go in Canada. Our immigration officers conduct random checks and we would not want to inconvenience you unnecessarily in any way. Your travel company will not admit you to their airplane, train, or ship without it, and we will most definitely not allow you into Canada unless you show it.
A valid passport is the only reliable proof of identity when travelling in any foreign country including Canada. Expect requests for it when cashing checks, hiring cars, or booking into accommodation. Please remember to keep your passport securely safe everywhere you go, and make sure the person asking for it remembers to give it back.
Finally, if travelling with minor children over whom you do not have full custody, make sure you have a consent letter before entering Canada, and accompany the child / children when arriving at the border.
